About the Instructor
Shihan Ugyen Wangchuk
Shihan Ugyen Wangchuk is a highly experienced karate instructor from Bhutan, with an extensive background in developing karate at both civilian and national levels.
He is the Founder of the Bhutan Karate Association, where he later served as National Coach and Technical Director, playing a key role in establishing structured karate training, coaching standards, and national development pathways. Under his leadership, karate in Bhutan grew with a strong emphasis on discipline, technical excellence, and youth development.
In addition to his civilian coaching work, Shihan Ugyen has served as a karate and unarmed combat trainer for the Royal Bhutan Police and the Royal Bhutan Army, delivering training focused on fitness, self-defence, control techniques, and discipline.
His teaching philosophy centres on using karate to build confidence, respect, mental strength, and physical fitness in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.
Now based in Perth, Western Australia, Shihan Ugyen leads Checkmate Karate Academy, continuing his lifelong commitment to teaching traditional karate and positive life skills to children and participants of all ages.
